YAY!  It's Ramona's Birthday!
And she is celebrating by inviting everyone to her party.  Let's all celebrate with Ramona and join in on the fun on March 11th from 5 to 9:00pm at the La Mesa American Legion Hall.  Please RSVP by calling (619) 593-8503
but, that's not all.  Ramona also took FIRST PLACE in the jewelry design competition at the Independent Jewelers Organization's recent show in Grapevine, Texas! Congratulations Ramona!

Our Gala committee hard at work planning for our upcoming gala to be held on June 3rd at the El Cajon Elks Lodge.  Let's all get behind this effort BIG TIME and help the committee make this a HUGE SUCCESS!

Joe Mackey is setting the tone early for our 2017 El Cajon Rotary Club Gala "El Cajun Fest".  You can tell Joe loves Mardi Gras!  Let's all start getting in the groove for El Cajun Fest.
Susan Ferrara introduced our first monthly vocational speaker today. Dave Johnson did a wonderful job of explaining the world of mortgage brokering.  Needless to say, Dave knows his stuff extremely well.  If you or anyone you know needs help with a mortgage issue, you know you can trust Dave and he is very good at what he does.  CALL DAVE!
How nice was it that Cheryl recognized Jamie at our meeting on Tuesday for all the hard work she is doing for RYLA.  Great job Jamie!

Literacy First Charter Schools
If you missed the meeting this Tuesday, you really missed a great presentation.
Debbie Beyer, Executive Director of Literacy First Charter Schools, did an awesome job in sharing with us a great deal of information about the charter school movement and specifically the history and evolution of Literacy First Charter Schools here in the East County.  Literacy First started in 2001 with 6 staff members and 100 students.  Today, just 16 years later, the school has grown to over 169 staff members and 1,617 students.

It's always nice to see Bob Chalfa from the Old Mission Club.  Many of us know how much Bob has poured his heart into the 1000 Smiles program in Ensenada.
Announcements &    Happy 5"s
  • Humbert Cabrera - Humbert asked everyone to BRING GLASSES to next weeks meeting for a donation to the Lions Club.
     
  • Stu Scott - Stu announced that he will host a FIRESIDE at his home on March 9th at 6:00pm.  Dinner will be served.  Please RSVP to Stu so he can plan appropriately.
     
  • Stu Scott - Stu also announced that the club will have our Rotary Work Day at his home on April 15th.  We will be making picnic tables to be donated to several deserving causes.  Everyone always has a great time at this event, so please plan to attend and have a great day with your fellow club members.
     
  • Bob Chalpa - Bob, a well known visitor to our club and long time member of the Old Mission Rotary Club, shared with us that he traveled to his home in La Paz last week for a little R&R.  On his way home at the airport, he ran into an old friend, and past President of his club.  They sat next to one another on the flight home and had a "make-up" meeting.
     
  • Alison Cummings - Alison was very happy to have had the opportunity to distribute dictionary's last week to two of her very favorite schools- Fuerte and Meridian Elementary Schools.  It brought back many fond memories to Alison.
     
  • Tim McDougal - Tim shared that he and Stana just got back from a terrific trip to Baja to enjoy an up-front and very personal whale encounter.  Tim highly recommended the trip to everyone.  And, the club wishes Tim a very happy birthday this month.
     
  • Jamie Lundy:  Jamie provided an update on RYLA and let everyone know that she will need volunteers next week to help with interviews.  Please call Jamie at (619) 244-0874 if you can help. 
     
  • Charlie Cole -Charlie announced the need for everyone to begin helping with the auction.  The auction will be on June 3rd at the Elks Lodge in El Cajon.  This is a "family friendly" event and kids are highly encouraged to attend.  Bring your friends.

    Tickets will be $50 for adults and $20 for kids .We need you to:

  • Cheryl Minshew - Cheryl announced that she was "DARN HAPPY" to be back with us at Rotary.  We are so thrilled to have you back with us Cheryl.  We have all been praying for Jim's quick recovery from a very difficult surgery. WELCOME BACK!
