Rotary is releasing $40.3 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, three countries where the disease has never been stopped. The funds will help build on gains Rotary and its partners have been making in the fight to eradicate polio. Nigeria hasn’t seen a polio case since 24 July and the World Health Organization could remove it from the list of polio-endemic countries as soon as September if no cases are reported. Nigeria would have to go another two years without a case to be certified polio-free. But the...

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Russian was the predominant second language offered in Polish schools, leaving tens of thousands of Polish emigrants without the English skills they needed.   That has changed over the last 25 years. English proficiency drastically improved after the government reformed its education system in 1991. The country overhauled its teaching curriculum and materials and introduced English as the primary foreign language. As of 2013, Poland ranks 8th in the world in English proficiency. However, one segment of the population isn’t reaping...

RI President-elect K.R. Ravindran introduced a member benefits program at the 9 June closing session of the 2015 Rotary International Convention, saying that many more hands are needed to continue Rotary’s work around the world. The program, Rotary Global Rewards, aims to boost membership and enhance member satisfaction. It will debut on 1 July. “This innovative new program will allow Rotary members to connect with hundreds of businesses and service providers from around the world -- and that number is growing,” said Ravindran. “These establishments will offer Rotarians discounts and...

Nigeria and the whole continent of Africa is on the cusp of being polio free, Dr. Hamid Jafari told audience members at the Rotary Convention on 8 June in São Paulo, Brazil. Between 2013 and 2014, the reported cases of polio dropped from 53 to just six in Nigeria. Even more encouraging, said Jafari, is that the last case of polio in Nigeria was reported in July of last year and the last case in all of Africa was reported in Somalia in August. “With a year of no polio cases in Nigeria tantalizingly close, and no cases in Somalia since August, the tireless work of so many people across the...

President's Message
Mr. Humbert Cabrera

Soon it will be time for me to hand over the reigns as President of this fine Rotary Family.  There are a few thoughts I wanted to share.
It has been an honor of my life to be your President.  We (including board members) are so grateful for the opportunity you gave us to serve.  So many of you have communicated to me in order to say thank you.  I say to you all… Thank you for the honor.
So often the speed of this appointment is too fast to connect.  I hope I have done my best to connect with so many of you.  I wish to continue this task.
As I look out my window, I see the breath of East County coming from the morning event.  A light fog takes over in the morning as the hills peak out as if reaching to touch the morning sunlight.  My task was to bring a touch more light to each of you and what we represent as a club to the community and to the world.
It has been a great journey.  Together I believe we started with some challenges.  But together , I see us near the end of this journey, and I can say… we are reaching for the end with confidence.
We have brightened our moral principals, our confidence in our mission.  I feel as if you have all been at the helm along my side.  Together we share in the triumphs.   We brought in 16 new member in a little over a year. The fund raiser brought in more donations than the past 4 years.  We began to centralize a document management system.  We moved to new methods of accounting.  We managed to work together with other Rotary Clubs and reached out to other service organizations like never before.  Our club donations are up and our registration for EREY is up. Our giving to local and international aid is on solid ground.
At times along our journey others told us that we would shut down or loose members.  Other opinions stated we would stagnate for the long term.  Instead we saw opportunity and took it.  We have seen an explosion in the amount of technology that we have brought into the forefront.  As a result, our giving and participation to needy groups has seen a booming increased.  People in the community have recognized our Club and are looking for leadership from us once again.  People from around the globe have heard the heartbeat  of our club.  I inform them that the heart of our club comes from experience and wisdom.  Our beliefs for over a century, reignited our principals brought back to the forefront of every meeting.
Common sense rather than strict regulations,   have made us a more caring and concerned not only for those we serve but for our own family of members.  We are always learning, and we learned that once a great movement is started that it not only changes you, but it touches the community and the world.
Is it the truth?, Is it fair to all concerned? … Our pride is not only for us as Rotarian’s but for us as a Nation.  This is something that will last beyond my Presidency and continue since it’s foundation was poured on the principals of thoughtfulness and knowledge.  Let’s bring this back to our dinner table, to our business lunch conversations, and when we pray every morning.
And so I say we’ve done our part.  To my fellow friends and members; We did it! The club is stronger, prouder, and we made a difference, and we left her in good hands.  I hope that I always brought a positive nature to your worst fears.  And that I made you feel a part of something when you may have felt alone.  I hope that I always appealed to the light and not to the darkness, to your hopes, to your confidence.  And that you will always know how grateful and proud I am of what you helped bring about.  May God’s blessings be with you.
