In lieu of its September 17 meeting, El Cajon Rotarians and invited guests will have the opportunity to tour the $950 million East County Water Purification Project in Santee, hosted by Padre Dam Water Board president, Bill Pommering, a member of the Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club.
The East County Advanced Water Purification Program will create a new, local, sustainable and drought-proof drinking water supply by using state-of-the-art technology to purify recycled water. This will produce up to 30 percent of the region's drinking water. Work for the entire project is expected to be complete in late 2025 with purified water production to begin in 2026.
In the works for about a decade, the project will take about 15 million gallons of wastewater now pumped daily to the Pt. Loma treatment plant and put it through an extensive filtration and purification process before it’s sent to Lake Jennings, treated once more, and then delivered to local homes and businesses.
