What began as a day of service became something even more lasting: a new spirit of collaboration among East County Rotary clubs.
During last year’s Epic Day of Service, Rotarians built little libraries across East County communities. Along the way, five clubs discovered that working side by side created more than a successful project—it built camaraderie, forged new friendships and sparked ideas everyone could rally around. One of those ideas was just beginning to take shape.
The lesson was clear: they were stronger together. Under the leadership of Area 5 Assistant Governor Karen Fleck and the five club presidents, the group decided to keep that momentum alive through joint quarterly socials. The participating clubs were the Rotary Clubs of El Cajon, El Cajon Sunset, Santee-Lakeside, La Mesa and La Mesa Sunrise.
Joe Mackey, president of the El Cajon Rotary, led the charge in organizing the first gathering. With support from his club and the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College, the vision quickly came together. The six-acre garden—with its themed landscapes and exhibits designed to inspire beautiful, water-wise living—offered an ideal setting to slow down, connect and enjoy one another’s company.
The evening delivered exactly what organizers had hoped for. In ideal weather, participants mingled over wine, beer and a generous appetizer spread before gathering in the meeting room. Each club president was introduced and offered a glimpse of the work, events and service projects energizing their club.
That first social proved the collaboration was more than a one-day success. Clubs are now sharing upcoming events and service opportunities, and members are increasingly joining projects hosted by neighboring clubs. As the presidents continue meeting, fresh ideas—and new partnerships—are sure to follow. The little libraries may have been the day’s most visible achievement, but the stronger East County Rotary community they helped inspire could become its most enduring legacy.
